Biological Theory of Dreaming

?
This is a model of dreaming proposed by Hobson and McCarley about dreaming. It is based on the idea that the brain is still active, but no information is coming through.
Activation Synthesis
1 of 15
This cell passes messages in the brain.
Neuron
2 of 15
A way of messages being passed, via crossing a synapse in the brain.
Chemical Transmission
3 of 15
A stage of sleep that occurs about five times each night, wherein dreams take place.
Rapid Eye Movement
4 of 15
Information generated within the brain is known as what?
Internally Generated
5 of 15
During REM sleep, no information passes to the brain.
Sensory Blockade
6 of 15
This is the term for when a neurotransmiter released by an impulse of one neuron crosses over and is taken up by the dendrites of another neuron.
Synaptic Transmission
7 of 15
According to activation synthesis, this is one part of the two that causes dreams - when the neurons are active.
Random Activation
8 of 15
An impulse down the axon.
Electrical Transmission
9 of 15
Who were the two psychologists who came up with the Activation Synthesis model?
Hobson and McCarley
10 of 15
This is the second part of the Activation Synthesis model, how dreams are created by the brain trying to make sense of the Random Activation of neurons.
Synthesis
11 of 15
This is a chemical at the terminal button of a neuron, which is released by the impulse and then goes into the synaptic gap.
Neurotransmitter
12 of 15
During REM sleep the body is paralysed.
Movement Inhibition
13 of 15
What is the space between the dendrites of one neuron and the next called?
Synaptic Gap
14 of 15
The people behind the Activation Synthesis model were not psychologists. What were they?
Biologists
