What was Sperry's research method?
Quasi-experiment
2 of 12
What was the IV in Sperry's study
Having a split brain/not (no control group was actually needed).
3 of 12
What was the DV in Sperry's study
Participant's ability to perform on a set of tactile and visual tests
4 of 12
Describe the sample of Sperry's study
11 participants with former epilepsy (all had a commissurotomy). 1 patient had his surgery over 5.5 years before the study, 2nd had her surgery over 4 years before others varied but not long before study
5 of 12
Describe a visual test
Covered one eye, fixed gaze on a fixed point in the centre of an upright translucent screen. Visual stimuli was projected for 1/10th of a second. Projected to the left on screen so entered left visual field to right hemisphere.
6 of 12
Why was the visual stimuli only shown for one tenth of a second?
So it only entered one side of the visual field
7 of 12
Describe a tactile test
below screen there was a gap so ppts could reach objects but not see their hands. Objects placed were placed left hand (goes to right hemisphere)/right hand (goes to left hemisphere) or both.
8 of 12
Describe the results of the visual tests
Info in one visual field could only be recognised if shown in the same visual field. Info presented to RVF could only be described in speech or point left hand to matching picture/object.
9 of 12
Describe the results of the visual tests in terms of $ and ?
If ? presented to RVF and $ to LVF ppt drew $ with left hand and reported seeing a ?
10 of 12
Describe the tactile test's result
Objects placed in RH could be described by speech or writing (when placed in LH often unaware they were holding anything). Objects only recognised if placed in same hand. Could only retrieve own object (when placed in both hands then in pile).
11 of 12
Outline Sperry's conclusion
People with split-brains have two separate visual inner worlds each with its own train of visual images
