Biological approach: Neuroanatomy

?
Ventricles
In Sz patients the ventricle grows by 15% and begins to go over the limbic system - This crushes the limbic system, so it becomes smaller - Resulting in loss of control of emotions
1 of 7
Cerebrospinal fluid
In the ventricles is Cerebrospinal fluid, the amount of this increases - Process called Hydrocephallus - The fluid relays information so information is sent more times in Sz's
2 of 7
Grey matter
More grey matter in a Sz patient - It's a build up of cells that contribute to information processing - So information is passed more times
3 of 7
MRI Scan
Magnetic Resonance Imaging - looks at liquid
4 of 7
PET Scan
Position emission tomography - looks at tissue
5 of 7
Suddath et al
MRI's showed in MZ twins, where one had Sz and the other didn't, the Sz twin had more enlarged ventricles - Differences so large the Sz twin could be identified from brain images in 12 out of the 15 pairs
6 of 7
Johnstone et al
Found Sz's had enlarged ventricles, while non-sufferers did not - This suggest Sz is related to a loss of brain tissue
