Give the definition of Biodiversity
The measure of the variation found within the living world
1 of 15
What is the definition of a habitat?
Where an organism lives
2 of 15
What is a species?
A group of organisms that can freely interbreed to produce fertile offspring
3 of 15
What is habitat biodiversity?
the range of habitats of which a species lives in
4 of 15
What is species biodiversity?
the range of organisms found within a habitat
5 of 15
what is genetic biodiversity?
The variation found that makes us all look differen e.g; a different breed of dog
6 of 15
what is random sampling?
where you randomly select sites within the habitat e.g; generating random numbers for coordinates.
7 of 15
give one advantage and one disadvantage to random sampling?
advantage; ensures data is biased by selective sampling disadvanatage; may not cover all the species in the habitat equally, species with low presence may be missed ( this can lead to an underestimate of biodiversity)
8 of 15
what is opportunistic sampling?
when the researcher makes sampling decisions based on prior knowledge
9 of 15
What is a advantage of opportunistic sampling?
it is easier and quicker than random sampling
10 of 15
What is a disadvantage to opportunistic sampling?
Data can be biased as certain species' may interest the researcher and make them want to include them in the sample
11 of 15
What is stratefied samping?
Dividing the habitat into areas which appear different and sampling each area seperately
12 of 15
Give one advantage and disadvantage of stratefied sampling.
ensures that all different areas of a habitat are sampled possibility that it can lead to over representation in some areas
13 of 15
What is systematic sampling?
when samples are taken at fixed intervals across the habitat
14 of 15
give one advantage and one disadvantage of systematic sampling.
useful when the habitat shows a clear gradient in a environmental factor, species may be missed as only species on the line or within the belt can be recorded
