133 pps Group 1 (34 females, 30 males) Group 2 (25 females, 24 males) average age 35.1 Opportunist sample- all pps attending a health centre in Britain

1 of 3 questionnaires and answering informal questions about their responses.

What did group 1 have to do?
Fill in a questionnaire designed to measure fear and avoidance (how near they would go to the animal) of 29 small harmless animals and insects eg rat, spider, worm, tortoise etc.

How did the pps in group 1 have to rate the animals?
Rate their fear on a 3 point scale (1=not afraid 2=quite 3=very) and their avoidance on a 5 point scale (1=enjoy picking it up, 2=would pick it up but unpleasant, 3=touch it, 4=stand 1-6 feet away, 5= 6+ feet away)

If it would be difficult to pick up in the wild what were the pps told?
That the animal was injured in some way eg. bird having a broken wing

They were harmless.

Fill in a questionnaire designed to measure the same 29 animals (as in group 1) on a 3 point scale of how ugly, slimy, speedy, sudden to move they are.

They only used people who did not already have a phobia of animals so as not to make their phobia worse.
