- lowered mood: sadness is most common, as well as feeling of emptiness

- anger: could lead to aggressive or self-harming behaviour

- lowered self-esteem: sufferers like themselves less than usual; self-loathing

- activity levels: reduced levels of energy, lethargic OR struggling to relax, resulting in pacing up and down a room (psychomotor agitation)

- disruption to sleep and eating behaviour: reduced sleep/increased need for sleep/appetite may increase or decr

- poor concentration: unable to concentrate, hard to make straightforward decisions

- attending to and dwelling on the negative: have a bias towards recalling unhappy events, ignore positive situations

- absolutist thinking: when a situation is unfortun
