Bacteria, Viruses, Pathogens

?
Bacteria
1) Prokaryotic organisms
2) Single-celled
3) Microscopic
4) Don't have a nucleus
5) have a circular chromosome of DNA
6) Some can photosynthesise
7) Most bacteria feed off of other organisms (both living and dead)
1 of 8
Examples of bacteria
* Lactobacillus bulgaricus (can be used to make milk go sour and turn into yoghurt) ROD SHAPED
* Pneumococcus - SPHERICAL/ROUND SHAPED
2 of 8
Virus
1) NOT PROKARYOTIC OR EUKARYOTIC ORGANISMS
2) These are particles, rather than cells, and are smaller than bacteria
3) Can only reproduce inside living cells.
4) A virus is an example of a parasite- it depends on another organism to grow and reproduce.
5)
3 of 8
Examples of Viruses
* Influenza virus
* HIV
* Tobacco mosaic virus - this makes the leaves of tobacco plants discoloured by stopping them from producing chloroplast

What are pathogens?
Pathogens are organisms that cause disease e.g. some fungi, protoctists, and bacteria

Viruses are pathogens but not living organisms
5 of 8
Examples of pathogens
Protoctist: Plasmodium- causes maleria

Bacterium: Pneumococcus- causes pneumonia

Viruses: Influenza virus- causes flu
HIV- causes aids
