B4 - Farming

?
What are pesticides?
a substance used for destroying insects or other organisms harmful to cultivated plants or to animals.
1 of 16
What are the disadvantages of using pesticides?
They can enter and accumulate in food chains causing a lethal dose to predators, they can harm other organisms living nearby which are not pests, some are persistent (take a long time to break down and become harmless)
2 of 16
What are some examples of types of pesticides?
insecticides, fungicides, herbicides
3 of 16
What is organic farming?
Farming without use of artificial fertilisers or pesticides
4 of 16
What does organic farming use in replacement of artificial fertilisers?
Animal manure and compost
5 of 16
Organic farming uses crop rotation. What does this mean?
the growing of different crops in succession on a piece of land to avoid exhausting the soil and to control weeds, pests, and diseases
6 of 16
What is a disadvantage of organic farming?
Crops are smaller and the produce is more expensive
7 of 16
What is a advantage of organic farming?
The crops are healthier and tastier
8 of 16
What is biological control?
Using living organisms to control pests
9 of 16
What is a problem that could arise with biological control?
Introduced species eating other useful species and then showing a rapid increase in their population so they themselves become pests
10 of 16
What is intensive farming?
Farming with use of artificial pesticides and fertilisers
11 of 16
What is a disadvantage of intensive farming?
Raise concerns about animal cruelty and the effects of extensive use of chemicals on soil structure and other organisms
12 of 16
What is a advantage of intensive farming?
Very efficient in producing large crop yields cheaply
13 of 16
What is hydroponics?
A system which uses a regulated recyling flow of aerated water containing minerals to grow plants without soil
14 of 16
What is an advantage of hydroponics?
Better control over mineral levels and disease and many plants can be grown in a small space.
15 of 16
What does intensive farming improve the efficiency of?
Energy transfer in food chains involving humans by reducing or removing competing organisms such as animal pests and weeds. Also by keeping animals inside sheds or barns, they use less energy on moving and keeping warm and more on growth or egg produ
