Attacked 'class enemies' such as: NEPmen who became rich women who wore western clothes. young ppl who listened to W music.

What was the role of Yagoda?
Head of secret police 1934. Important part in great Terror: buddied w/ Stalin in turning secret police against communist party. But under Yagoda secret police members treated communist officials w/ respect. So purge of Stalin's opponents = slow.

What was the role of Yezhov?
Escalated terror. Replaced officials w/ ones who would use torture. Responsible for worse years of terror, 1936-38. 1.5m ppl, 10% male population arrested by NKVD, 680,000 executed.

What were the show trials?
Removed leaders of party factions that opposed Stalin. Trail of 16 = eduction of Zinonoviev by Yagoda, 1936. Trial of 21 = lead by Beria, execution of Bukharin & his allies, including Yagoda.

What was the role of Beria?
Head of secret police 1938 WW2 he deported / executed minority groups e.g. Chechens. In charge of building a bomb, 1st one tested 1949.
