The total number of PROTONS and NEUTRONS; found at the top left corner of an element.
1 of 6
What is the Atomic number?
The number of PROTONS. Atoms of the same element ALL have the same number of protons; found at the bottom left corner of an element
2 of 6
How do you work out the number of NEUTRONS?
ATOMIC NUMBER - MASS NUMBER=TOTAL NUMBER OF NEUTRONS.Mass number for PROTON= 1. Mass number for NEUTRON= 1. REMEMBER: ELECTRONS aren't counted in the mass number because their RELATIVE MASS is very SMALL.
3 of 6
What are COMPOUNDS?
COMPOUNDS are formed when atoms of 2 OR MORE elements are CHEMICALLY COMBINED together. It is DIFFICULT to separate the two original elements out again.

What is meant by the term ISOTOPE?
ISOTOPES are: DIFFERENT ATOMIC FORMS of the SAME ELEMENT, which have the SAME number of PROTONS but a DIFFERENT number of NEUTRONS.
5 of 6
What is the KEY POINT to remember for ISOTOPES?
ISOTOPES must have the SAME ATOMIC NUMBER but DIFFERENT MASS NUMBERS.If they had different mass numbers, they'd be different elements all together.
