What is a nucleon?
A proton or neutron.
1 of 17
What is a cation?
A positively charged ion.
2 of 17
What is an anion?
A negatively charged ion.
3 of 17
What is an isotope?
Atoms of the same element with a different number of neutrons and different masses.
4 of 17
What is mass number?
The number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom.
5 of 17
What is atomic number?
Number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.
6 of 17
What is relative atomic mass?
The weighted mean mass of an atom of an elements when compared to 1/12th of the mass of one atom of C-12.
7 of 17
What is relative isotopic mass?
The mass of one atom of an isotope when compared with 1/12th of the mass of one atom of C-12.
8 of 17
What is the charge,mass and position of a proton?
Charge= +1. Mass= 1. Position= Nucleus.
9 of 17
What is the charge,mass and position of a neutron?
Charge=0. Mass=1. Position= Nucleus.
10 of 17
What is the charge,mass and position of an electron?
Charge=-1. Mass= 1/1836. Position= Shells.

What is mass spectroscopy used for?
To determine the relative abundance and mass of each isotope of an element and hence the relative atomic mass.
12 of 17
What are the names of the four stages of mass spectroscopy.
1)Ionisation. 2)Acceleration.3)Deflection. 4)Detection.
13 of 17
Describe Ionisation.
Gaseous sample of substance is bombarded with high energy electrons.This results in the removal of electron(s) to create a positive ion.
14 of 17
Describe Acceleration.
Ion are accelerated by an electric field- they enter a magnetic field.
15 of 17
Describe Deflection.
Magnetic field deflected the ions. Degree of deflection depends on mass of ion. Ions with greatest mass are deflected least.So,ions are separated according to mass.
16 of 17
Describe Detection.
At detector, positive ion accepts an electron and causes a current to flow. Current is proportional to relative abundance of the ion.
