Reliability Asch
Strong as it was scientific and repeatable and consistent. This is because conditions were controlled so it could be repeated, e.g. position of true pp always the same.
1 of 9
External Validity Asch
Weak as it didnt paint true picture of real life conformity as it was lab experiment (artificial conditions) so artificial task, e.g. pps wouldnt normally have to judge length of lines repeatedly with strangers.
2 of 9
Sampling Asch
Problematic - 123 is good because its a large sample size, but they were all male from 3 usa colleges so would have experienced gender and culture bias so not representitive so generalisations cannot be made.
3 of 9
Data Asch
Strong, produced quantitative data (36.8% pps conforming in critical trials) so comparisons can be made. Also qualitative based on their interviews 'not to spoil results' so gave more depth.
4 of 9
Ethics Asch
Problematic - Naieve pps didnt give fully informed consent as they were told study was about visual judgement. Also some pps may have been destressed when faces with social pressure so werent protected from harm. However pps were debriefed.

Alternative evidence studies for Asch?
Sherif, Jenness and Perrin and Spencer.
6 of 9
Sherif alternative evidence for Asch?
Supported as pps changed their opinion on how far a light moved in the dark. This supports Asch as he also found that pps opinions were influenced by social pressure. Asch's research was stronger as his task was unambiguous, so more reliable.
7 of 9
Jenness' alternative evidence for Asch
Supports Asch as pps estimated beans in a jar and converged to a group after discussions with other pps. Supports Asch as confomity also occurred. Asch's study is stronger as Asch's pps were not asked to form a group estimate.
8 of 9
Perrin and Spencer alternative evidence for Asch
In a replication of Asch, they found that only one student conformed through 396 trials. Rejects Asch as it suggests asch's findings lacked historical validity, however perin only used 22 science students so challenge is reduced.
