Random Sampling
A method of sampling whereby all participants have an equal chance of being selected in a population to take part in the study. An example might be random generation of names by a computer or `drawing names out of a hat`.

Opportunity Sampling
A method of sampling whereby all participants are chosen to take part because they are convenient. An example might be asking people who happen to be sitting in a local cafe.

Volunteer Sampling
A method of sampling whereby participants volunteer to take part, perhaps by responding to a notice requesting volunteers.

Qualitative Data
Research that focuses on collecting data in the form of opinions.

Quantitative Data
Research that generates the type of data in the form of numbers.

Participant Observation
Is when the researcher participates in the activity under study in an overt way (their presence is obvious to the other participant).

Non-participant Observation
Is when the researcher observes the activity without getting involved in it (their presence is unknown to the participants).

Structured Interviews
Any Interview in which the questions are decided in advance.

Unstructured Interviews
The interview starts out with some general aims and possibly some questions, and lets the interviewees answers guide subsequent questions.

Interviews
A research method or technique that involves a face-to-face, real-time interaction with another individual and results in the collection of data.

Questionnaires
Data is collected through the use of written questions.

Closed Questions
Questions that have a range of answers from which respondents select one; produces quantitative data. Answers are easier to analyse than those for open questions.

Open Questions
Questions that invite the respondents to provide their own answers rather than select one of those provided. Tend to produce qualitative data.
