AS 1 Maths Topic 1: Algebra and Indices

?
Indices
Solve
Write each term to the same base
Maybe use dummy variable
1 of 5
Rationalising surds
If surd on denominator, multiply whole fraction by surd on denominator
Might have to swap sign e.g 5/ (3^1/2 + 2)
multiply ny (3^1/2-2)
2 of 5
Rules
a^m x a^n = a^m+n
a^m / a^n = a^m-n
(a^m)^n = a^mn
(ab)^m = a^m b^m
(a/b)^m = a^m / b^m
a^-m = 1/a^m
a^1 = a
a^0 = 1
1^m = 1
a^m/n = nth root of a to power m
3 of 5
Common mistake
If a solve equation equals a fraction, get rid of the fraction by multiplying by the denominator (I would usually just take the fraction across and subtract)
