Insecta, mostly terrestrial, head thorax abdomen, 'six feet', thorax has 3 segments, up to 12 segments in abdomen, one pair of antennae, small, hatch from eggs, moult several times,
1 of 6
Describe the terrestrial life of insects (respiratory & excretion)
Respire through tracheae, spiracle valves reduce water loss, blood not usually used to deliver oxygen (haemolymph usually used), get rid of waste as uric acid
2 of 6
Describe the life cycle of insects
Hatch from egg, moult several times, ecdysozoan, metamorphosis (different species can have full or incomplete metamorphosis)
3 of 6
Describe the flight of an insect
Each wing moved with a dozen muscles, not just up and down, direct flight muscles (attach directly to the wing base) and indirect ( move wings by deforming thorax)
4 of 6
Name 4 examples of specialised senses that differ from those of humans
Most detect ultraviolet but not red, several use plane of polarisation of light for navigation, some detect and respond to bat cries, some are extremely sensitive to pheromones

How many orders of insects are there and can you give a few examples?
