What was the Eridu settlement like?
Settlement based on irrigation, fish and cattle. Most structures were houses. Organisation capable of building major public architecture. Temple increases in size and important residences located near temple and poorer individuals pushed further out.

Mud-brick houses with narrow, winding streets. Earliest structure is the Anu Zigguart. 50,000 citizens. City wall 6 miles long. Development of first writing - cuneiform.

Became economic and military rival of Uruk. Maintained significance as a relgious centre. Abandoned by 400BC. Main structure around the Ziggurat.

Became the capital after the fall of Ur in 2000 BC. In 1700s BC it controlled all of Mesopotamia. Power declined.

Capital of the Assyrian empire 700-612 BC. Located on River Tigris. City walls 5km long. Fell in 612 BC. One of the largest cities. Grew from two smaller settlements. Elaborate palaces. Three areas - royal precint, arsenal and lower town.

Warring city states. Population mainly urban. Came together for several different reasons including irrigation and fortification. Temple complexes within cities.
