A Pathogen contains ANTIGENS on its surface.
A LYMPHOCYTE with ANTIBODIES matching the antigen are activated
1 of 5
the Lymphocyte divides continuously to produce identical copies of the lymphocytes
BUT how are they used.....???
2 of 5
Some Lymphocytes release large amounts of ANTIBODIES which stick to the pathogen and destroy it.
Others remain in the blood as MEMORY LYMPHOCYTES to respond immediately if the pathogen attacks again.
3 of 5
MONOCLONAL ANTIBODIES carry chemical treatments
They are identical because they are produced from the same HYBRIDOMA CELLS
4 of 5
They can be used in Pregnany tests or to treat cancer
TREATING CANCER: deliver drugs to target organs so only target cells are affected as oppose to radiotherapy in which surrounding cells are also affected.
