Jim is telling Kate about his patients.

JIM: Every man does have a star. The star of one's honesty. And you spend your life groping for it, but once it's out it never lights again. I don't think he went very far. He probably just wanted to be alone to watch his star go out.
Jim is telling Kate that Chris will come back but his integrity will be ruined.

Joe can't believe that Kate is telling him to apologise for shipping the cylinder heads.

KELLER: You wanted money, so I made you money. What must I be forgiven?
Joe is defending himself to Kate about his lack of apology for shipping the cylinder heads.

MOTHER: There's something bigger than family to him. KELLER: Nothin' is bigger!
Joe is telling Kate that Chris should put his family above all and not be angry at Joe.

KELLER: There's nothin' he could do that I wouldn't forgive. Because he's my son. Because I'm his father and he's my son.
Joe is telling Kate that he would forgive Chris if the situation was reversed as family is everything.

KELLER: He understood the way the world was made. He listened to me. To him the world had a forty-foot front, it ended at the building line.
Joe is telling Kate that Chris is stupid for being so honest by comparing Chris to Larry.

KELLER: For you Kate, for both of you, that's all I ever lived for...
Joe is telling Kate that he did what he did for the family.

CHRIS: I'm yellow. I was made yellow in this house.
Chris is telling Ann that he wants to be alone because he doesn't deserve her and because he is ashamed of himself.

CHRIS: Now I'm practical, and I spit on myself.
Chris hates that he can no longer be idealistic.

CHRIS: This is the land of the great big dogs, you don't love a man here, you eat him... the world's that way... this is a zoo, a zoo!
Chris was telling Ann about how in the war people were honourable, but at home they are not.

KELLER: Who worked for nothin' in that war... war and peace, it's nickels and dimes. What's clean? Half the Goddam country is gotta go if I go! That's why you can't tell me.
Joe is telling Chris that he doesn't deserve to go to prison and Chris knows it, because everyone is just as bad as Joe.

CHRIS: I know you're no worse than most men but I thought you were better. I never saw you as a man. I saw you as my father.
Chris is telling Joe that he wants to send him to prison because he thinks that he should have behaved better than other men.

KELLER: Sure, he was my son. But I think to him they were all my sons. And I guess they were, I guess they were.
Joe is telling Kate that he wants to go to prison because he understands what Larry was saying.

CHRIS: You can be better! Once and for all you can know there's a universe of people outside and you're responsible t it, and unless you know that you threw away your son because that's why he died.
Chris is telling Kate that she and Joe have to be better people because Larry didn't die so that Joe would take the blame for the pilots deaths, Larry died so that Kate and Joe would be better people.

MOTHER: Don't take it on yourself. Forget now. Live.
Kate is telling Chris not to blame himself for Joe's death and to move on with his life.
