Functionalist view: Parsons
(Traditional view)
Social cohesion is based on age groups knowing their place and their role. In most countries it is traditional as people “respect” their elders. Such things as in teen hood they get cheeky and mischievous.

Believes elderly people are seen as s
childlike &immature. That they are seen as they need people to take care of them and help. Believes that society views the elderly as invalid or unable to help themselves.

Argues that there are different roles people play because of their age.
E.G: children go to school, adults go to work
It is different in different countries. Traditionally every country held the same view and respect towards each generation.

Believes elderly to be a burden on society, elderly used to be idolised. Societies become increasingly individualistic, and norms regarding the care of older people have changed. This is because their working life has ended, and they usually have less.

(Traditional view)
Oakley and Gannon believe that women are not treated equally to men in society which is traditional as women have always been undervalued to men. Seen as not being capable of knowing what is good for them.

Postmodern view: Blaikie
(Traditional view)
Believes that people grow up in different stages, starting by learning about socialisation and then as they go older, they start acting on it whether it be ambition or maturity, they retire and get ready for death.
