Tragedy
The inevitable death of a main character as a result of their own "fatal flaw". There is conflict within and between characters, which creates choas that must be restored by the end. Tragedies are centred around powerful emotions, too.

A chorus character, who delivers a prologue and mainly observes and narrates. Also, he is a lawyer in the neighbourhood, seen as a "connection with disasters". Alfieri is powerless in Eddie's fate.

They make the story happen. Arrival of the two cousins, into the Carobone home. Plus, Catherine reaching maturity means she gains independance, which is shown by her desire for a job.

Marco and Rodolfo are attracted to America because of the glamour and prospects of money. Eddie wants Catherine to have a better life over the bridge and is ambitious for her.

Head of Carbone household and works on the docks. Eddie is hard working, honourable and responsible for his family. He has resentment towards the cousins from the start, is powerful and manipulative.

Catherine's auntie, who has raises her niece. She always tries to keep the peace in the Carbone family, has a stay at home life and often supports Catherine in disputes.

Eddie and Catherine's relationship
A complex relationship. Catherine seeks Eddie's approval and is very attached to him. Eddie is very protective of her and has high ambitions for his niece.

Eddie and Beatrice's relationship
The couple are lacking an intimate relationship for at least three months. Eddie get's irritated at his wife and Beatrice is suspicious. Yet, when things get tough, they are loyal to each other.

Catherine and Beatrice's relationship
Beatrice is Catherine's only blood family left. Beatrice encourages her niece to leave home and be independent, so she won't have a life like her own.

Assumed to be an orphan, and lives with her only family. She is very grateful to Eddie and Beatrice, hence initally torn when the cousins arrive.

The law may not always act in favour of justice, and most of the charachters would prefer to take the law into their own hands to serve justice.

A vital part of the story. Foreshadows betrayal, rejection from community and family values. Eddie becomes similar to Vinnie later, and has to break his own rules.

The setting of the play described as "a slum that faces the bay" near a busy harbour. An unpleasent place to live, due to violence and lack of affluence.

The bridge
Refered to in the title of the play, and is the Brooklyn Bridge. It is metaphorical of the entrance to the kind of world which the characters aspire to live in.

The cousins refer to thier old homes, showing the awful poverty they left behind. There is a lack of jobs, food and money in Sicily.

Loss of childhood
During the play Catherine grows up to be more independent and confident. The talk with her auntie makes her realise her childhood is ending, but she needs to move on.

Marco lifts the chair
Seen as a warning to Eddie and humiliation. The event causes the men to be wary of each other and is a dramatic climax to end Act One.
