3 of 11
complex ion
a metal ion surrounded by co-ordinately bonded atoms
4 of 11
ligand
an atom, ion or molecule which can donate a lone electron pair to form a co-ordinate bond to a metal ion or metal (that's a transition metal)
5 of 11
co-ordination number
the number of co-ordinate bonds formed to a central metal ion
6 of 11
unidentate ligand
these are ligands which can only form 1 co-ordinate bond per ligand. E.g. H2O, NH3, Cl, CN-
7 of 11
bidentate ligand
these have 2 atoms with lone pairs and can form 2 co-ordinate bonds per ligand. E.g. NH2CH2CH2NH2 [en] or ethanedioate ion C2O4-2
8 of 11
mutlidentate ligand
these can form 6 co-ordinate bonds per ligand. E.g. EDTA4-
9 of 11
ligand substitution
this is when 1 ligand is swapped for another. Usually resulting in a colour change,
