what is a structured interview?
an interview with a formal approach where the interviewer follows a specific order of questions said word for word with the same tone of voice for each one

what are the strengths of structured interviews?
high response rates, interviewer reads and writes, questions can be repeated, quick as questions are usually closed, can cover large samples, can compare peoples answers, collects quantitative data

what are the weaknesses of structured interviews?
interviewers presence can influence answers, formality can make people feel uncomfortable, not flexible, not good for sensitive topics, cant build rapport

what is an unstructured interview?
interviews with a less formal approach where questions can be removed or added and the wording and order can be changed

what are the strengths of unstructured interviews?
high response rates, flexible, collects qualitative data, can probe for more detail, interviewer reads/writes, questions can be explained, good for sensitive topics, respondents feel more comfortable

can go off topic with no structure, doesnt work if interviewer doesnt have social skills, cant be repeated, hard to comparetime consuming, interviewers presence can influence answers, chance of going native,

interviews where the researcher asks questions to a group of people and they have a discussion about it

what are the strengths of group interviews?
access to lots of info at once, can help people feel comfortable, people can expand on each others answers, can observe body language, people can support each other if topic is sensitive

what are the weaknesses of group interviews?
cant build individual rapport, peer pressure, not everyone will have equal opportunities to speak, difficult to control participants, can make people feel pressured, participants may not have the confidence of speaking in a group, time consuming,

what is a semi-structured interview?
interviews that are less formal than structured interviews where questions are asked in the same order but can be explained and more can be added

high response, interviewer reads/writes, answers can be explained, less formal, flexible, collects quantitative and qualitative data

collected information about peoples experiences and views of crime to get a true reflection of crime, carried out every year on laptops, same questions each time with new added, respondents are 16+, 75% response rate

small scale survey aiming to find the role of family, friends and neighbours in peoples lives, sample of a working and a middle class area in London, 72 questions, 8 open questions, 59% response rate, collected qualitative data

what was dobash and dobash's study?
interviewed 109 women living in or previously lived in womens refugees to explain domestic violence in society, only asked women in scotland who were heterosexual, no men, didnt involve those still in relationships, built strong relationships

what was ann oakley's study?
interviewed 66 women in a london hospital to find out about first time motherhood, spent 6 months with them asking personal questions, consisted mainly of middle class women from the same culture, small age range, biased as she was a mother herself
