produced from a seed boll. A cellulose based fibre. The fibres are short staple fibres. They are picked by hand or machine, cleaned and then turned into yarn. Products made from this fibre are cool to wear but can be brushed which makes them warm

Linen
also known as flax. A cellulose based fibre. Fibres that are produced are smooth, straight, lustrous and very smooth. Used for clothing and furnishings. Fabrics are cool to wear

Wool
from sheep and other animals. Fibres have a crimp or curl and have overlapping scales that can lock together and create felt.

Silk
Long, smooth filament fibre- but occurs naturally. Fabrics are cool to wear and soft, but are expensive and hard to wash.

Polyester
A versatile synthetic fibre that is often blended with other fibres. Polatec and Patagonia make recycled polyester from plastic bottles.

Nylon
regarded as a modern fibre it is very strong and robust. It can be mixed with other fibres

Acrylic
creates a soft, warm fabric that emulates wool in its handle and feel

Elastane
a rubber based material that can be used to add stretch and elasticity to products

Aramid
very strong fibres that are used for a variety of protective products. Kevlar and Nomex are well known types of this fibre.

Tencel
a staple or filament fibre that is made using 'environmentally friendly' manufacturing processes

Viscose
a regenerated fibre that has a very soft cotton like feel but creases easily.
