What are the 3D lattice directions and how can they be represented?
R = Ua+Vb+Wc defines [UVW]
2 of 9
Describe a key trick needed for finding a lattice point vector
Don't need to start from the axis origin. Can choose new origin and also can move vector to new origin so that the vector is easy to find.

Define 'Miller indices'
Representation of the orientation of an atomic plane in a crystal.(the reciprocal of fractional intercepts which the plane makes with the crystallographic axis)
4 of 9
How can Miller indices be determined?
1)Determining intercepts (for the 3 directions 2) Take the reciprocals 3) Make sure the values are whole numbers--> multiply out by the denominator to get rid of fractions
5 of 9
How can 2D lattice planes be determined ?
Whete the plane intersects the x-axis: a/h and y-axis: b/k {where a and b are vectors}. The plane is represented by (hk).
6 of 9
How is the plane that is parallel to the x-axis represented?
2D: (01) 3D: (011)
7 of 9
How is the plane that is parallel to the y-axis represented?
2D: (10) 3D (101)
8 of 9
How is the plane that is parallel to the z-axis represented?
3D: (110)
