How are messages sent differently in the nervous system and the hormonal system?
Nervous system send nervous impulses via neurones whereas the hormonal system carries chemicals called hormones which are carried in the blood stream
1 of 20
Which form of communication is faster?
Nervous system
2 of 20
Whcih form of communication is widespread and longlasting?
Hormonal system
3 of 20
Which system carries messages to all parts of the body but only target cells respond?
Hormonal system
4 of 20
Which form of communication is usually temporary and reversible?
Nervous system
5 of 20
What effect does hormonal communication have?
May be permanent and irreversible

Name 7 parts to a sensory neurone
- Synaptic ending - Axon - Cell body - Dendrite - Node of ranvier - Myelin sheath - Schwann cells
7 of 20
Why does the cell body contain lots of ER?
Associated with the production of proteins and neurotransmitters
8 of 20
What are dendrons?
Extensions of the cell body which subdivide into into smaller branched fibres called dendrites
9 of 20
What do dendrons and dendrites do?
Carry nerve impulses towards the cell body
10 of 20
What is the function of an axon?
To carry nerve impulses away from the cell body
11 of 20
Where are schwann cells located?
They surround the axon several times so that layers of their membranes build up around it
12 of 20
What are the functions of schwann cells?
- Protect axon - Insulate axon - Carry out phagocytosis - Play a part in nerve regeneration
13 of 20
What is the myelin sheath?
It is a covering to the axon made up of layers of the schwann cell membrane which is rich in a lipid called myelin
14 of 20
What are neurones with a myelin sheath called?
Myelinated neurones
15 of 20
What are the nodes of Ranvier?
Constrictions between adjacent schwann cells
16 of 20
What three types of neurones are there?
- Sensory - Motor - Intermediate
17 of 20
Where does a sensory neurone carry the nervous impulse from and to?
From a receptor to an intermediate neurone
18 of 20
Where does an intermediate neurone carry the nervous impulse from and to?
From a sensory neurone to a motor neurone
19 of 20
Where does a motor neurone carry the nervous impulse from and to?
From an intermediate neurone to an effector
