        • The parasympathetic nervous system calms the body down. Parasympathetic neurones release the neurotransmitter acetylcholine
        • Sympathetic nervous system sets the body ready for action, its known as the fight of flight system. Sympathetic neurones release the neurotransmitter noradrenaline

        • largest part of the brain
        • two halves called cerebral hemispheres
        • has an outer layer called the cerebral cortex which is highly folded
        • involved in hearing, thinking, vision and learning
      • Medulla oblongata
        • based at the base of the brain
        • automatically controls breathing and heart rate
      • cerebellum
        • under the cerebrum and is also folded
        • important for muscle coordination, posture and balance
      • hypothalamus
        • lower middle of brain
        • maintains body temperature
        • produces hormones that control the pituitary gland
