- Flame tests can be used to identify metal ions:
- Lithium compounds result in a crimson flame
- Sodium compounds result in a yellow flame
- Potassium compounds result in a lilac flame
- Calcium compounds result in a red flame
- Barium compounds result in a green flame
- Testing for Sulphate Ions:
- Add a few drops of dilute hydrochloric acid to the solution
- This is to remove any carbonate ions, which would gve a false positive
- Then add some Barium Sulphate
- If sulphate ions are present a white precipitate…
