Witchcraft

It was thought that witches had made a pact with the devil - they would do his work in return for having special powers e.g. flying and being able to make people/animals sick/die. Witches were believed to have a companion that helped them e.g. a cat, dog, rat, spider. One sure sign of a witch was when the companion could suddenly appear in the room with them. Witches would often have the 'devil's mark' on their body e.g. a scar, boil or spot. In reality, these were often the result of a poor diet or hardship.
