Why did Stalin emerge as leader of russia?

Party powerbase: This is his postition of power within the party. Stalin was the General secretary as well as head of Rabkrin.

Being general secretary meant that he had the power over the politburo's agenda, he could select delegates for party congress and could control promotions within the party aswell as controlling people's appointments. Significance; He was able to influence what was discussed at politburo meetings. He also had the power to fill the party congress with his supportes or people he wanted. He could also promote people he thought deserved it and could prevent people from attending meetings by booking appointments for when a meeting was in progress.
