Utilitarianism is the argument that suggests that what is good is the promotion of pleasure or happiness (classical utilitarinism) or of peoples prrefernces (modern utilitarianism). The classical account of utilitarianism was created by Jeremy Betham, an english philosopher. Classical utilitarianism argues that the ultimate good is pleasure or happiness is a form of act utilitarianism. Human behaviour can be explained by physcological headonism: pleasure is the sole good and evil is the sole evil. The rightness of an action depends entirley on the pleasure it tends to produce.

The principle of utility is than an action ought to be performed only if it brings about the maximum possible happiness for those parties affected by the action- "the greatest happiness for the greattest number". This is essentially act utilitarianism- we tally the consquences of each action we perform and determine on a case by case basis whether an action is morally
