Utilitarianism application

Animal experimentation

Act utilitarianism

  • Act utilitarianism would not take into account any devious moral judgements on animal experimentation
  • they would use the principle of harm to decide  whether the particular case of animal experimentation would, or would not create the biggest gap between pleasure and pain
  • they would also use the hedonic calculus to measure the morality

rule utilitarianism

  • rule utilitarianism would generate deontological rules to follow on animal experimentation
  • it can be seen that medical reasearch on animals does create more pleasure than pain
