Using bacteria in genetic engineering

Why do we want to use genetic engineering?

• To improve a feature of the recipient organism e.g. giving certain plants resistance to herbicides
• So we can engineer organisms which can synthesise useful products e.g. inserting human hormones such as insulin into bacteria
