Using bacteria in genetic engineering

Why do we want to use genetic engineering?

  • To improve a feature of the recipient organism e.g. giving certain plants resistance to herbicides
  • So we can engineer organisms which can synthesise useful products e.g. inserting human hormones such as insulin into bacteria

It is often bacterial plasmids which are used as the vector during genetic engineering. If the plasmids are cut with the same restriction enzyme as the one which cuts the DNA then they
