First 154 words of the document:

Genetic Engineering and Bacteria
There are two reasons for carrying out genetic engineering:
Improving a feature of the recipient organism
o Inserting a gene into crop plants to give the plant resistance to herbicides;
allowing maximum yield for the farmer.
o Inserting a growth control gene to promote muscle growth in livestock.
Engineering organisms that can synthesise useful products
o Inserting the gene for a human hormone, such as insulin or growth hormone,
into bacteria and growing the bacteria producing large quantities for human use.
o Inserting the gene for a pharmaceutical chemical into female sheep so that the
chemical is produced in their milk and can easily be collected.
o Inserting genes for beta-carotene production in rice so that the molecule is
present in the edible part. It can be turned into Vitamin A in people who eat it.
