• a nation of farms, however cities were beginning to grow
• had island colonies in places like Hawaii and Puerto Rico
• population of about 105 million people, from lots of ethnic backgrounds
• new immigrants were still arriving from Europe, Asia, and Latin America in search of work or an escape of persecution
• people already settled there were descendents of the original European settlers, the African Americans who were used as slaves and Native Americans
• the diversity made the USA a melting pot of different cultures, though there were some tensions between them
