Research methods - types of experiment (lab)

Advantages

  • control - the effects of other variables which aren't of interest will be minimised
  • replication - the study can be run again to check the findings
  • casual relationships - able to see whether one variable impacts another

Disadvantages

  • artificial - don't necessarily measure real life behaviour (lack ecological validity)
  • demand characteristics - participants response may be influenced because they know what is being investigated, this causes bias
  • ethics - deception (withholding information about the study) means they can't have given informed consent

Evaluation

Aim: to control all variables except for one (the independent variable). These types of experiments are conducted in a artificial setting.
