Tsunamis are most commonly caused by underwater earthquakes.

At a destrcutive plate boundarie,subduction results in considerable compression within the lithosphere, resulting in reverse faulting.

Release of pressure along the fault results in an earthquakes and can cause displacement of the seabed by several metres.
