The Kapp Putsch (1920)

  • Allies insisted that the two brigades of Freikorps be disbanded
  • One of the brigades led by General Luttwitz marched into Berlin with Wolfgang Kapp (a journalist who hated Friedrich Ebert for signing the Treaty)
  • The soldiers took control of Government buildings and the Government was forced to flee to Dresden
  • Kapp announced a new national Government
  • Ebert called on the army to stop the revolution but they refused "TROOPS DO NOT FIRE ON TROOPS"
  • Instead, Ebert called the workers in Berlin to go on strike; this brought the five-day revolt to an end
