Modernity is the period between the mid 17th century and mid 20th century which was characterised by an increase of scientific understanding and explanation. 

Social order is the stable state of society with shared norms and values that enable people to live together in everyday life. 

Sociology was an attempt to apply similar scientific principles being developed to understand the natural world to the development and organisation of human societies. Belief was sociologial research could help achieve a more stable society by elimating social problems like poverty, homelessness, crime and the resentments and conflicts caused by social inequality. 

Research is often concerned with social order - how a relatively stable staate of society manages to live and relate together which enables them to live together without chaos and anarchy.
