· The Poll Tax 1989 – 90.
· Thatcher followed through with her reforms of local government and attempts to make it cheaper and more accountable. The Poll Tax, a local tax on all people in a certain area, was supposed to enforce this.
· It introduced local tax for more people than previously, the rationale being that the cost of local services would then be cheaper as the cost would be more widely shared.
· She hoped that people would then vote out high spending Labour councils in favour of Conservative ones.
