The Emptiness of Wealth

• The shallowness of wealth and the destruction that it causes is a major theme in the novel E.g the Agra Treasure impacts directly/ indeirectly upon the majority of the characters at some point
• Plus, two characters are murdered for it, Tonga is killed trying to flee with it and Dr Watson feels that a conflict could arise in his relationship with Mary becuase of it
• Not to mention, the entire novel is a build up to retrieving the treasure and its massive fortune but rather unforunately, it is tossed into the bottom of the river Thames providing the novel with an anti- climax
