  • London
    • CONTEXT: London is a poem about the effects of power on the people. It's written as a personal experience and shows what life is like from a walk around London, told by the narrators perspective.
    • Structure
      • The poem is split into four stanzas which each have a slightly different subject focus
    • Themes
      • Effect of power on people
        • 'the hapless soldiers sigh' shows that people are being forced into things. It shows how he doesn't really care for protecting the King, but is forced to.
      • The effect on the innocent
        • Blake expresses how the innocent are affected when he describes 'every infants cry of fear'. This shows that everyone is being effected even when they're not developed enough to understand what is happening.
        • Wives are also affected when they receive 'the youthful harlots curse'. In other words, they receive illnesses caused by their husbands infidelity. It again emphasizes how much the unhappiness of the city effects everyone
    • 'Marriage hearse' is an oxymoron which shows how any joy the people of London face, it is automatically followed by sadness. Marriage is a joyous occasion which celebrates two peoples love for each other, however, when pairing this with a 'hearse' which is the car used at funerals, it brings a whole new meaning. It can suggest that there's no point in trying to be happy as it just causes more dread. Also, it can be linked to the STI's which the wives are getting from their cheating husbands.
