The role of social support in coping with stress

Social support: the help an individual recieves from their friends, family and acquaintances; especially during stressful times. There are three types of social support.

Emotional support  : Can be shown through phrases such as 'I really feel for you'. This expresses warmth, comfort, concern, affection and love. This is intended to lift someone's mood. 

Instrumental  : This is practical and tangible support, which could be in the form of physicslly doing something to help or providing information. 

Esteem support  : Try to reinforce someone's faith in themselves and their belief in their own ability to tackle a stressful situation. This can be done through expressing confidence and
