Rule of Northumberland, 1549-53

  • Formely known as the Earl of Warwick, he benefited the most from the fall of the Duke of Somerset.
  • He had no direct link to the King, Edward VI and therefore had to gain much support from the council.
  • He gained the titles Duke of Northumberland and Lord President of the Council. (As he had to govern through the privy council)
  • Northumberland was seen as a ruthless opportunist, however, he had to work under difficult circumstances which occurred in 1549.

Religion under Northumberland

  • Northumberland was keen to support Protestants with radical views. This was evident in his policies:
  • Treason Act - it became an offence to question the Royal Supremacy of the King.
  • The Second Act of Uniformity - it became an offence for both the clergy and laity not to attend Church of England services.
  • 1552 Prayer Book - The Prayer Book removed any remaining traces of Catholicism and the mass. 
  • In 1553 instruction were sent to replace the altars with communion tables.
  • Commissioners soon began to seize Church gold and silver plates.
