The National Lottery:

Department for Culture, Media and Sport

  • £3 billion invested since 1997
  • Won the right to host the 2012 Olympics and Paralympic games
  • Decides and organises how lottery grants are distributed through organisations such as UK Sport

The Lottery

  • Primary source of funding for in the UK
  • For every £1 spent, 28p goes towards good causes such as sport
  • However fewer people by lottery ticket now, so money generated has declined
  • Provides around £200 million annually which is distributed by UK Sport
  • Before national lottery, both up and coming performers relied on parents and their Families, part-time work, NGB’s, donations from private companies and money from charities to ‘by into’ the chance of international
