The Benedict's test for sugars

All suagrs can be classified as reduicing sugars or non reducing suagrs. 

To test for sugars you use the Benedict's test. The test differes depedning on the tyoe of sugar you're testing for. 

REDUCING SUGARS:

Reducing sugars include all monosaccharides and some disaccharides, e.g: maltose and lactose. 

1. Add Benedict's reagent (which is blue) to a sample.

2. Heat it in a water bath that's been brought to the boil. 

3. If the test's positive it will form a coloured preceipate. 

4. The colour of the preciptiate changes.
