Hurricane Katrina:
Location: New Orleans, south east USA.
Date: 2005.
Formation: over the Bahamas on the 23rd August; moved north west over the warm water of the Gulf of Mexico; struck Louisiana and Mississippi on 29th August (Category 3).
Louisiana & Mississippi: winds of 200 km/h; 200-250mm of rainfall; storm surge of 8.5m.
Social impacts:

1,836 were killed.

300,000 houses were destroyed; hundreds of thousands were made homeless.
