Sociology research design and primary research methods

?

Research aims set out what the researcher is planning to investigate and so provide the study with a clear focus.

A hypothesis is a statement that can be tested and then either supported or proved wrong by the evidence.

A pilot study is a small scale trial run carried out before the main research

- This checks if the main study is likeyly to generate relevant data

- The researcher can also check the proposed reaserch methods to see if they are appropriate.

Types of data

Primary  - information that researchers have gathered themselves such as questionnaires etc

Secondary - information that has been collected by somebody else and then used by the researcher such as statistics etc

As well as this, it can also be separated into Quantitive and Qualitative data

- Quantitative data is presented as numbers shown in statistics. An easy way to remeber this is by the 'n' in quantitative which you could remeber as 'numbers'

- Qualitative data is in depth material, usually descriptive and presented in written form. Again, an easy way to remeber this is my the 'l' in qualitative which you could remeber as 'letters'

Reliable data - your findings can be checked by another researcher and get the same results e.g questionnaires.

Valid data - the findings of your research are detailed, truthful and accurate.
