Smart materials react to change in their environment.  This includes a change in colour, shape or resistance

Electroluminescent

materials are able to emit light in response to the application of an electrical current or a strong electric field.

Shape-memory alloys

 is an alloy that "remembers" its original shape and that when deformed returns to its pre-deformed shape

Thermochromic pigments are a type of colour-changing pigment that respond to changes in temperature. They are designed to change colour or become transparent when exposed to heat, and then revert back to their original colour as they cool down.
