Support for parental influence- Smith and Lloyd showed that mothers do treat boy and girl babies differently, in line with sex-role stereotypes. 32 Mothers were videotyped playing for 10 mins with a baby (not their own), The baby was dressed and named as boy or girl. Two were actually boys and two were girls but their names and clothes was not always consistent with sex. Seven toys were present: A squeeky Hammer, A rabbit stuffed in trousers (masculine), A doll, A squeaky bambi (feminine) A squeaky pig and a rattle (neutral). When thought they were playing with a boy they would offer the gender approptiate toy.
