REDUCTIO AD ABSURDUM- an argument that highlights the absurdity of a conclusion drawn when followed by seemingly sound premises.

PERFECT ISLAND- one can think of the perfect island in his mind- an island that exists only in the mind is not as good as an island that exists in reality and mind- if this isallnd only existed in the mind it would not be the greates possibe island- it must exist in reality and mind- this logic doesnt make the island exist

ANSELMS REPLY- you cant compare an island to god- god doesnt rely on anything for his existence- gaunilios idea iof a perfect island is subjective to a persons preference- anselm formulates an if and then statement to back this up.

FOOL-His reply to anselm : 'on behalf of the fool'-
